Filters are vitally important
There are three basic types of pool filters: Sand, D.E. (Diatomaceous Earth), and Cartridge. Sand filtration has been around longest and is still most common. All filters work by the same general concept – water is passed through a media (sand, D.E. or cartridge), which catches microscopic particles, blocking them from entering back into the pool. Since the filter is the last line of defense in trapping debris, it is important to use the proper type of filter and clean it as necessary. Filters remove organic impurities such as leaves, dirt, grass, hair, and body oils from the water. This helps keep the pool sanitary and clear. The importance of proper filtration is obvious. Clear water not only looks beautiful, but it is also necessary for health and safety reasons. Much of the material suspended in the water, derived from plant and animal sources, provide food for bacteria and algae. It is these materials that must be removed if a pool or spa is to be maintained in a safe and sanitary condition.
